»Lise Meitner’s life reflected her times to a
remarkable extent. She was among the leading atomic physicists of her day, one of the
first women to succeed in a very male domain, and in 1938 a desperate refugee from
Germany whose contributions to the discovery of nuclear fission were unjustly obscured.
In my talk I shall focus on Meitner and her physics, emphasizing the interdisciplinary
science behind the discovery. I shall also discuss the political conditions that
affected the way the discovery was reported, understood, and recognized during the
Nazi years and in the postwar period.«
